Giant Molecular Cloud Formation through the Parker Instability in a Skewed Magnetic Field
نویسندگان
چکیده
The effect of the magnetic skew on the Parker instability is investigated by means of the linear stability analysis for a gravitationally stratified gas layer permeated by a horizontal magnetic field. When the magnetic field is skewed (i.e., the field line direction is a function of the height), the wavelength of the most unstable mode is λ ∼ 10H where H is the pressure scale height. The growth rate of the short wavelength modes is greatly reduced when the gradient in the magnetic field direction exceeds 0.5 radian per scale height. Our results indicate that the Parker 1 instability in a skewed magnetic field preferentially forms large scale structures like giant molecular clouds. Three-Dimensional Evolution of the Parker Instability under a Uniform Gravity
Using an isothermal MHD code, we have performed three-dimensional, highresolution simulations of the Parker instability. The initial equilibrium system is composed of exponentially-decreasing isothermal gas and magnetic field (along the azimuthal direction) under a uniform gravity. The evolution of the instability can be divided into three phases: linear, nonlinear, and relaxed. During the line...
متن کاملThree-Dimensional Simulations of Parker, Magneto-Jeans, and Swing Instabilities in Shearing Galactic Gas Disks
Various instabilities have been proposed as candidates to prompt the condensation of giant, star-forming cloud complexes from the diffuse interstellar medium. Here, we use three-dimensional ideal MHD simulations to investigate nonlinear development of the Parker, magneto-Jeans (MJI), and swing mechanisms in galactic disk models. The disk models are local, isothermal, and begin from a vertically...
متن کاملMagnetar giant flares and afterglows as relativistic magnetized explosions
We propose that giant flares on Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters produce relativistic, strongly magnetized, weakly baryon loaded magnetic clouds, somewhat analogous to solar coronal mass ejection (CME) events. Flares are driven by unwinding of internal non-potential magnetic fields which leads to slow build-up of magnetic energy outside of the neutron star. For large magnetospheric currents, correspond...
متن کاملResistive MHD simulations of the Parker instability in galactic disks
Parker instability leads to the formation of tangential discontinuities in a magnetic field and subsequent magnetic reconnection due to a numerical and/or an explicit resistivity. In this paper we investigate the role of the uniform, localized and numerical resistivity on the diffusion of magnetic field lines during the growth phase of Parker instability modes. We propose a new method to quanti...
متن کاملTwo-fluid Mhd Simulations of Converging Hi Flows in the Interstellar Medium. Ii: Are Molecular Clouds Generated Directly from Warm Neutral Medium?
Formation of interstellar clouds as a consequence of thermal instability is studied using twodimensional two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We consider the situation of converging, supersonic flows of warm neutral medium in the interstellar medium that generate a shocked slab of thermally unstable gas in which clouds form. We found, as speculated in paper I, that in the shocked slab mag...
